What is India’s Ranking in English Proficiency Index ( EPI ) ?

EPI is the acronym for the English Proficiency Index. English Proficiency Index is an important benchmark for adult English proficiency. By dint of the score of the English Proficiency Index mechanism, we can comprehend the English proficiency level of adults of any country. 2019 is the ninth edition of the English Proficiency Index and the survey was done among one hundred ( 100 ) countries.

EF SET ( EF Standard English Test ) is a standardized test of the English language designed specifically for non- native English speakers . The EF English Proficiency Index ( EF EPI ) attempts to rank countries by the average level of English language skill amongst those adults who took the EF test . It is the product of EF Education First , an international education company and draws its conclusion from data collected via English test available for free over the internet .

The index is the online survey first published in 2011 based on test data from 1.7 million task takers . EF Education First is an international education company focusing on language , academic , education , travel and cultural experience . It was established in 1965 with the mission and vision of opening the world through education . EF has more than five hundred (500) schools and offices over fifty(50) countries .

Importance of English Proficiency Index ( EPI ) :-

In a volatile global economy , English proficiency is one of the few skills with proven ability to generate opportunities and strengthen employability . EPI is the key indicator of economic competitiveness at both the individual and national level . High English proficiency correlates with higher income , better quality of life , greater connectivity and more dynamic business environment .

English Proficiency Index ( EPI )on Gender :-

It is observed from the data of EPI that women have stronger English language skills than men in almost all the countries and age groups . Women in India beat men in English proficiency as per the EF EPI . By gender Indian women were found to have a distinct edge over the male counterparts ( 56.93 vs 55.10 ) when it comes to English proficiency . Male in India score 55.10 in English proficiency skill while women achieve a score of 56.93 . In the global platform also women adults outpace male .

English proficiency Index Score is Not the Transparent Indicator :-

India is a country with a large amount of income inequality and the rich of India tend to be very rich compared to the rest of the population . So the results could be in favour of India if a larger section of people would participate in the test . 99% of the poor people simply would not participate in the survey . Some people advocate that the methodology adopted by EPI has huge flaws . The figure does not mean anything because the scores are not based on representative samples .

But in spite of this doubt and controversy English Proficiency Index is one of the potent barometers to assay the overall present condition of a country in each and every aspect and necessary steps should be adopted accordingly .

  32. Much thanks to you sir to compose a particularly delightful article. From this blog we can see that India’s positioning in English capability file is low. Youngsters’ in different nations whose english capability is high are learning english at a more youthful and more youthful age. In India, if the public authority take essential measures to permit english in the prior phase of training and make it necessary, the communicated in english capability might be increment step by step. 🙂

  33. First of all, I would like to thank you for giving opportunities to go through such a wonderful article. As I see from your article that European countries are having higher EPI score than Asian countries and I was shocked to see the ranking of our beloved country. However, I, was also happy to see that Indian women are having higher EPI score than men.

I think they are couple reasons why we are lagging behind.

    1) Per capita income.
    2) Educational system.

Per capita income : As we all know that India is a developing country and most of our population are still trying to figure out basic needs in 21st Century. So if a family is not earning enough to meet their daily requirement than that family would not have a bandwidth to support their children’s education.

Educational system : Most of the government schools if not all don’t have English to be their first language. If we are not from English medium schools then the first time we come across English as subject when we are in Class 5 or may be later that.

  34. First of all, I would like to thank Indrajit Ganguly for writing such an interesting article on this topic. After seeing a couple of comments, it is very much clear to me that we are not happy with India’s EPI score. We need to understand it very well why the score is poor and what were the reasons behind it. Two-thirds of people in India live in poverty. Precisely, 68% of the Indian population lives on less than INR 150 per day. So when people don’t have adequate money to survive it is quite luxurious to them to send or admit their children in any english medium school for learning English. Everyday they are struggling to make both ends meet and It is like daydream to them oneday their children will speak in English. Now a days educational infrastructure in Govt school is pathetic. Most of the schools don’t have proper classroom or space where students can learn effectively in school than from home. Lack of qualified teachers is another issue. In Govt school teachers do not even utter a single word in English. So, when the foundational knowledge of a student is not strong then how we can expect that student will speak in English. So, if we have to improve our score then Govt should comes up with some educational policies or schemes for the poor children where they can take admission in reputed private schools without worrying about fees and other educational amenities.

  35. If we talk about the current situation of our country then English is a very important language to learn which is easily communicable and the basics are to be gained by challenging the language learning. Like if we do the survey’s, attain all the available competitions, though if we actually look through our orthodox culture some people won’t understand the value of retaining it and the usage of learning English. Well, according to the upi, as I said before our dominating and patriarchy society won’t allow us to complete the following genre of this particular format because for them the family business is enough to make money and secure there lives, future and knowledge. Many of the Indian women are not being allowed to learn after their completing of higher secondary exams and forcefully been heading towards a house maker life which is absolutely unethical and dissatisfaction for them if they are to be allowed to do their profession they would easily achieved something that would benefit there future so according to the whole basis I’ll say this the reason why India is still lacking its order.
    Thank you.

  36. I have benefited greatly from this interesting article. EF Education is doing a great job for designing a test of the English language specifically for non native English speakers. But I was shocked to see the rank of India. Our education system is responsible for this shocking result. There is no emphasis on teaching english in many government schools in India. That’s why India is lagging behind. Now a days English is very important in our life. It will be very difficult for us to get a job without knowledge of English. If we can speak english fluently, we can communicate with people all over the world. I hope India’s place will be better later.

  37. In today’s era spoken English is very much important for professional as well as personel life. In my perspective, I don’t think that EPI gives the correct information about what percentage of people in a country speaks English fluently means yeah it’s really so harsh to assay. Well phillipiens is no.2 in Asia continent is shocking for me and india on 5th position but it’s not perpetual, don’t be skittish. India will surely grow up and hit the top position as the new generation is keen to learn English also government changed the education policy after 36 yrs and become more practical.
    Hope for best
    Thank you ?

  38. First of all, I want to thank you sir because you have given us the opportunity to gain a lot of information by writing this beautiful article. We saw the ranking of all the countries but we are saddened to see the ranking of India. The fault of education. If every Bengali medium school taught correct English language then maybe our ranking would be high.English Language Proficiency (EPI) The only way to grow up is to have the right English language skill for every person and every child.Everyone should be able to speak good English. Everyone knows English well. In my opinion, this is the way to make English Language Proficiency (EPI) High.
We all are appreciate you sir for writing this awesome article.

  39. Thank you to the author who had given us such a very interesting and knowledgeable article.
I had really learned a lot.
It was a great helpful to me when I was reading this article.
You made this easy to understand that English Language Proficiency (EPI) is the ability of students to use the English Language to make and communicate meaning in spoken and written contexts while completing their problem of study.
Thank you again for your excellent, clear and clinically oriented presentation.
    We all are appreciate you.

  40. We can see that India’s ranking in the English proficiency index is very low. I think the main reason behind this bad result is our education system and wrong attitude. In other countries, those who have more English skills are learning English from a young age. However, in the case of India, it is not for various reasons. We need English education for higher education abroad, for better jobs, for business meetings, and so on. As we can see, the language of the internet is also English. So without knowledge of English people cannot use internet service properly. Only people with English knowledge can communicate with people around the world. I think that in India, if English education is given due importance and necessary steps are taken to make it compulsory, the proficiency in English of the people of India can increase day by day.

  41. *My Views*
There is no doubt that E. P. I serves as a good functionary in measuring the English language proficiency of the adults of a country. But, if we notice the ranking of the countries according to the index corresponding to the efficiency level in English language, there is no surprise that the Scandinavian countries are atop. If one sees the history of English language, one will find that Scandinavian languages had considerable influence upon English language. So it is quite obvious that Scandinavians will show high standard of proficiency in English language. But performance of Malaysia and Phillipines is surely inspiring for India who is trying to improve it’s skills in English language in every parameter.
Now sound knowledge in English definitely provides a good scope in job sector, particularly in countries with colonial hangover .But one also has to keep in mind that in today’s age of globalization, English language certainly acts as a lingua-franca, courtesy to the British Imperialism.
Now, when we think of appropriating people with standard norms of English language, we must keep in mind that those people have to gain enough proficiency in their mother tongues. This helps a lot in acquiring the skills in a foreign language. Also dearth of good teachers is a crucial factor. Probably some of these are the reasons of lacklustre performance of countries like Pakistan , Sri Lanka and others.
Well Education First has been doing a great service in imparting English language all over the world widening the horizon of education since its inception. In the course of time criticism will arise as per law of evolution, if we can say that.None the less, kudos to such initiatives and it is expected that they will march on overcoming all the loopholes.

  42. Tilottoma Chakraborty Anandi

Firstly, I want to thank Indrajit Sir for writing such an interesting article which contains lots of information. We can see that India’s ranking in English proficiency index is very low. I think, the main reason behind this shocking result is our education system. Children’s in other countries whose english proficiency is high are learning english at a younger and younger age. But in India majority people are sending their children to government schools of their mother tongue because they can’t afford english medium school. Economic discrimination is also a major problem regarding this matter. I think spoken English is necessary in every aspect of life. For higher education in abroad, better job, travelling in different countries, for business meetings etc. Necessity of good English speaker is everywhere. As we can see that the language of Internet is also English. So without english knowledge people can’t use Internet service properly. People with the knowledge of spoken English can communicate with people all over the world. I hope, In India, if the government take necessary measures to allow english in the earlier stage of education and make it compulsory, the spoken english proficiency may be increase day-by-day.

  43. Education Is the pillar of the society. Every Indian requires a proper education. Its quite shocking about the current ranking of our beloved country .Some countries ,which have much lesser GDP than INDIA,acquires better ranking in the list. Rather blaming each other, we should think about this matter seriously. This is High Time. Everyone should focus on it.

  44. I think the education system of India creates an impact on the EPI.
Anyhow govt is focusing upon coding or computer languages but there remains many lags on the rest of subjects like there is no sex education in our country. So I think every small thing is very important to grow the proficiency of English speaking,, whether it is education or it is any other source but we have to do the things in a right and organised way. That’s where we are lagging.

  45. First Of all Thank You Sir, for raising voice about this burden problem of Our society. We all Know, Education Is the pillar of our society. It is really Shocking to know that India is holding the position so down in the ranking list while it shouldn’t be.Our Government Should Focus on this matter. Education Makes a Country Stronger. But in our country, due to nonsense some political issues, Education system hampers. Not only Government, people should be aware of this.

  46. First of all, thanks to EF Education for creating such a unique test to literally enlist countries according to their english proficiency index and also a big thanks to Indrajit Sir for actually letting us know this by this blog. Though there’s nothing to feel proud even after getting lowered gradually year after year in EPI chart but one thing we should keep in mind that, those scandanavian countries with high proficiency, they are being exposed to only 1 or 2 languages everyday. But in a country like India, where more than 720 dialects are spoken across the country,we are getting exposed to different languages everyday. In Kolkata, most people are speaking in Bengali, then it comes Hindi, then English mostly in corporate sectors, telugu and what not. These all languages are going inside our brain,we are hearing this each and everyday even if we don’t want to. So,it’s natural for a human being not being able to digest a particular language other than his or her mother tongue so fluently in India.
I don’t know, I could explain it to you or not,but genuinely feel so.

    1. Thanks a ton for your invaluable appreciation of my article . I will be grateful to all of you for spending precious time in reading my article .

    2. First of all i am very happy to learn a new interesting survey but after learning this I am getting confused . I think the reason is all government school are not English medium.if the foundation is not strong then how can we blame to each other. The first and foremost thing is that government should think about our schooling system otherwise in future this rank will be decreased.

  48. Remarkable! Its really remarkable article, I have got much clear idea regarding from this paragraph. Lissa Ethelred Frohne Elena Alvie Kippy

  51. First of all, thank you so much for drawing our attention in the particular type of topic.
To be very honest, I am not at all surprised to see India’s position because as a student and resident of India, I can clearly witness the education system, which is degrading day by day.
However I really appreciate the fact that female EPI score is 56.93 whereas male EPI score is 55.10 , regarding the sex ratio of the total population in India is 108.18 males per 100 females.
Eventually, I totally agree that the better a country’s English, the more it innovates, the more money its people will make. I think its a high time to take a stand for our advancement.

    1. The article shows the gap that Indians or most of the Asian countries have with the European as well as North American countries in terms of EPI. This also affects the economical aspect of the nation as trade becomes harder with the lack of communication between the traders. This low rank is mainly due to the fact that television (which is the most influential way to learn something over the last decade) shows are mostly in the local language of the nation and few are prepared to watch shows in English to better their English. The school and college professors transition between English and their local language for better understanding of the subject. Taking Singapore as an example, although it is not a Christian based country but English has become an integral part of their lives and that has lead to their growth in the field of technology.
It is currently a hub for statistics and other fields in Asia as well as the whole world. We all need to communicate more in English and I myself believe that learning different languages along with English is as important as just learning English.

      1. Well , in this article what I have found that all the European countries have performed as expected but when i scrolled down to the Asian score , i got really shocked. India is holding the position so down in the ranking while it shouldn’t be . It was colonised by the english for so long years and then even got independence 74 years back , still it ranked so down in the list ! Whereas Singapore has ranked first ! Wow ! As far I know Singapore is a people made country , it got independence in 1965 after so many consignment, still it has performed so well. I think Our education system should more emphasis on English skills of the students , so that we can rank up in the list.

      2. Well , in this article what I have found that all the European countries have performed as expected but when i scrolled down to the Asian score , i got really shocked.

  55. I am thanking to IG to raise this subject. I think the Government of India is need to be practical . It is too much theoretical and this is the main problem of government of India. And we Indians, we need to be a little theoretical but completely practical. Our main problem is that we are habituated in phuthi mukhasta biddha.

  56. In this blog we seee all are countries gradation but in India gradation is very disappointed me ….we have to reach a profiency level every day we have to push ourself ..,…..if we don’t found anybody to discuss thn we have to do it with ourself…..we should found where we start the mistake……nd ef said that in india max women are good in English ………i am very happy to hear that …..its motivatede more and more…….we promise our self that we also reach that gradation like abroad country nd we have to fluence people to talk in English after that we could achieve tgat goals…….

    1. I know that India’s ranking maybe very disappointing for someone but I want to point it out that there are opsimaths who are trying to learn not only English but also some other topics. As our India was dominated for so many years and due to some political issues , still now India is regarded as developing country from all the major points not a developed country. Thanks to this article from which we can learn our place in whole world and this will also help us to make India a developed country, place the country’s name in the top ten .
